The movie opens with a scene that shows Victoria turning a young student named Riley Biers into a vampire to help her execute her plan against the Cullens. The group quickly figures out that she is assembling an army of newborn vampires. In the wake of this vision, Edward takes Bella to Jacksonville to visit her mother while the rest of the group tries to take down Victoria in Forks. To combat this, Jasper who is familiar with newborns and the way they can be utilized in fights, trains the family to prepare them for the attack.
In the portion of the movie between the preparation and the actual fight, we further explore the themes set in the second movie. We get a similar conversation between Bella and Edward where they discuss the conditions of her turning into a vampire.
Edward reluctantly agrees to the action under the condition that the two get married first. The day before the fight Bella, Edward, and Jacob camp out on the mountain top to keep her safer. There the love triangle between the three finally gets resolved after Jacob kisses Bella and she realizes that while she loves Jacob, those feelings cannot be compared to the love she feels for Edward. The fight ensues and the Cullens manage to defeat the army without losing anyone from their own group aside from Jacob getting injured while protecting Leah.
Victoria and Riely find Bella and Edward but they manage to defeat the two and return to the rest of the group. The Volturi delegation finally makes their appearance and Jane points out that Bella is still human but the Cullens retaliate by saying that the date has already been set.
Bella is pleasantly surprised to see Jacob returned and the two share a dance in the woods. Bella admits that she and Edward plan to consummate their marriage on their honeymoon while she is still human. Jacob becomes furious, knowing that such an act could kill her. Two weeks after the wedding, Bella starts to believe she is pregnant.
After seeing Bella upon her return to Forks Jacob is furious and shares the same concerns as Edward. The only thing that somewhat helps her condition is drinking human blood in order to feed the baby.
The two start performing a cesarean section and it seems that the procedure has helped but while Bella and Edward are sharing a moment with their newborn child her heart stops beating. Jacob and Edward try to bring Bella back to life but nothing seems to help.
This leads Edward to try changing Bella in desperation but the attempt remains unsuccessful. Both men are distraught by the knowledge that Bella has died and Jacob tries to kill Edward but ultimately leaves stating that the worst punishment Edward could endure would be living with the knowledge that he killed Bella. In his anger, he wants to kill their newborn daughter Renesmee but he ends up imprinting on her.
This caused her transformation to be slower than usual. This scene is a nice conclusion, however, a mid-credit scene reveals that the Volturi have their sights set on acquiring the new member of the Cullen coven no matter the cost. The aforementioned mid-credit scene sets up the main conflict of the last movie of the series. Bella, who has recently given birth, awakens from her human-to-vampire transformation and meets her daughter Renesmee for the first time.
She is furious when she discovers Jacob has imprinted on Renesmee before Jacob explains what imprinting is. Carlisle comes to the conclusion that they must leave Forks, Washington in order to protect their identity, especially in light of Charlie. Jacob visits Charlie, anxious not to lose Renesmee, and informs him that Bella is alive and well, but that she had to adapt in order to improve. Another vampire, Irina, sees Renesmee, and because she is convinced the child is an immortal child she decides to inform the Volturi.
Creating immortal children was prohibited since they presented a huge liability to their kind due to their uncontrollable nature. The Volturi see this as an opportunity to get what they want and get on their way to Forks, Alice sees this in a vision and sets out on a mission with Jasper to find more evidence to prove Renesmee is not an immortal child.
Although they manage to gather a significant number of allies, Edward and Carlisle come to a conclusion that the fight is almost inevitable at this point.
Aro is allowed to contact Renesmee and comes to the conclusion that she is not an immortal girl. Aro continues to believe that Renesmee will pose a threat in the future, proving his point that combat is important. Before any fighting erupts, Alice and Jasper return, and Alice shares with Aro her vision of the upcoming war, in which both sides will suffer heavy losses, including Aro himself dying.
