The Sierra Club is a c 4 social welfare organization. As such, gifts to Sierra Club are not tax-deductible. This status allows Sierra Club to engage in legislative lobbying and political advocacy to a much greater extent than most other groups.
Sierra Club is able to advocate for strong environmental laws and candidates at the municipal, state, and federal level because of its unique structure.
Sierra Club's Board of Directors sets Club priorities and policies and approves the national Club budget with Club member input. It has a staff of advocates and organizers who defend and advance environmental policies that fight climate disrupting pollution, protect air and water quality, advance clean energy, support parks, and preserve natural resources, wildlife and wildlife habitat. The staff also works to keep members around the state informed about legislative and regulatory activities affecting the environment.

There are expeditions tailored to families, seniors and the disabled. Sierra Club chapters host local outings for day hikes, bicycling, bird-watching, peak scrambles and cross-country skiing.
